Looking Back

(This was from PAD day 23: .write a "looking back" poem. I edited again, recently...Idea is from my mother in her last year--dementia creeping in, I'd sometimes give her the words she was looking for)

Looking Back

one idea, one word,
from the tossing twitch
of your tongue,
goes missing
into the fine gray mist again.
A simple thought gone away
toward that vacant horizon
barely an echo now,
just before the crow
takes it in his hard beak
migrating further and further away
taking even the seed of memory.
Your discomfited eyes,
weep of anger over---
The sun warms your back,
newspaper dropped in your lap,
my hand strokes your bone thin fingers.
I remember for you.
