House of the Tomato

If a woman wants to be a poet, she must dwell in the house of the tomato. -- Erica Jong

Sunflowers reinvent yellow,
flowers within flowers,
florets sun-gold,

Your fourth sister, your accomplice,
Your life and death and longing.

We all know the story,
that line in the leaf.

Consult the sunbutter,
     spun summer,
     sizzle of seedpods.

Two kinds of flower,
Two kinds of seed,

spiraling in two directions.
a golden ratio of means,
what adds up together,
what perpetuates,
what turns heads.

Sunflowers gallup
towards the sun,
tap you on the shoulder,

look you in the eye.
